The NAU School of Art + Design is a dynamic, creative higher education community situated in a striking natural landscape. Offering a BFA in Studio Art, a BS in Secondary Art Education, a BS in Interior Design and an Art Minor, the School is committed to career readiness, sustainability, inclusivity, community engagement, and academic excellence. The Sculpture Area is housed in the School of Art + Design (SoA+D), within the College of Arts and Letters and serves 200 BFA majors. The Sculpture Facility is a large, flexible space that primarily supports metal and wood fabrication, and casting. Faculty in the SoA+D are dedicated teaching artists who actively integrate their research and creative work into the curriculum and classroom.
About the Position
The School of Art + Design at Northern Arizona University seeks a full-time, Assistant Professor of Sculpture at our Mountain Campus in Flagstaff, Arizona.
The successful candidate will demonstrate evidence of 1) successful and innovating teaching and/or curriculum development (or demonstrated potential to do so), 2) an active exhibition record, and 3) a willingness to engage in community-building and a school-wide initiative to enhance the student experience.
Responsibilities Include:
• Teach three courses per semester in all levels of sculpture or sculpture-related topics and in accordance with departmental needs.
• Coordinate the Sculpture Area, which includes maintaining the facility while prioritizing safety, efficiency, and cost effectiveness.
• Guide students with a Sculpture Emphasis in developing conceptually rigorous 3D works that build towards their capstone project.
• Provide service to the SoA+D, College, and/or University in the form of committee work.
• Contribute to a vibrant and supportive SoA+D community of students, faculty, and staff.
• Engage in various activities serving the school, college, and university.
• Draw on experience to build networks between the SoA+D and creative professionals.
• Collaborate with colleagues in maintaining and innovating a rigorous curriculum that prepares students to enter the creative sector.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
This is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at the Flagstaff Mountain campus with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.
This is a 9-month, benefit-eligible, promotable, tenure-track position beginning August 2025.
Minimum Qualifications
• MFA in Sculpture or related field by date of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications
• Evidence of full-time college/university-level teaching experience in sculpture or related field.
• Evidence of innovative teaching and/or curriculum development.
• Evidence of a strong or developing exhibition record.
• Demonstrated contemporary approach to art-making that includes traditional and interdisciplinary methods.
• Experience using and/or teaching a variety of sculptural practices and materials, including digital fabrication.
• Experience fostering and creating a collaborative, inclusive, and supportive learning and working environment.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to teach a wide range of curricular levels.
• Ability to use and teach a wide range of sculptural techniques, processes, and media including wood and metal fabrication, and casting.
• Ability and willingness to teach drawing at the fundamental level.

This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election. The long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following election. FLSA Status
This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.
