Job Description

The Advising Manager position works within University Advising and supervises a team of Academic Advisors at varying levels, oversees delivery of content specific programming relevant for assigned student populations, and works directly with campus colleagues, students, parents, and other stakeholders. This position will be working within a combined team assigned to College of Nursing, College of Health and Human Services, and College of the Environment, Forestry, and Natural Sciences; the role will oversee advising for the College of Nursing and the Department of Biological Sciences.

This position is responsible for maintaining relevant advising and university expertise and overseeing the provision of advising services with the end goal of promoting and cultivating holistic academic and career success of all students. Leads the design, implementation, and evaluation of advising services, ensuring all students receive access to accurate and timely advising through an approach that successfully serves students.

Contributes to the success of all NAU students by providing leadership within the advising team and throughout the university advising and campus community.

Supervision - 50%

• Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate 6-8 full time advising team members.
• Establish a supportive, inclusive, and nurturing team environment that aligns with University Advising's values and standards.
• Measure and document the growth of each employee to provide continuous constructive feedback, determine when additional support or training is needed, and complete their performance appraisals.
• Provide leadership to your home, combined, and project teams in a away that helps all staff connect their work to the University Advising and NAU mission and road map.

Assess Team Services and Determine Priorities - 20%

• Oversee the delivery of advising appointments, office staffing coverage, and specialized programming for student populations. Participate in the delivery of advising services as needed.
• Determine team duties, projects, and specific assignments for each employee, develop timelines and oversee those projects and timelines in collaboration with your combined team.
• Responsible for the collection and maintenance of data for reporting and assessment purposes.
• Oversee the daily operations and coordination of the advising services and tools provided for students within your combined team.
• Provide high quality advising to students.

Contribute leadership to University Advising - 15%

• Engage in a meaningful way within your combined team to advance the mission of University Advising and support the academic journey of all NAU students.
• Participate in project teams, cross-team initiatives, and contribute positive leadership within the University Advising management team.
• Model effective teamwork and professional behaviors for success as laid out by NAU HR.

Establish and Maintain Effective Relationships With All Stakeholders - 10%

• Build and maintain effective working relationships in support of all NAU students and programs.
• Handle escalated situations in a solution centered, professional manner that aligns with NAU's student-centered institutional culture of care.
• Demonstrate professionalism through all communication channels
• Work together in various team settings to accomplish projects, support one another, and create an environment of continuous improvement.
• Demonstrate knowledge of increasing complexity in essential advising topics.
• Demonstrate ability to build meaningful relationships with students that are based in empathy, compassion, and appreciative, developmental, and intrusive advising techniques.
• Promote discussions and student mastery of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) through strong assessment practices, and introduction of content or prompts appropriate to each student.

Minimum Qualifications

• Undergraduate bachelor's degree.
• 2-4 years of relevant experience.
• 1-2 years of management or supervisory experience.
• Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

• Supervision within the higher education setting, or related field.
• Relevant advanced degree.

Background Information

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. Salary

Anticipated salary range is $58,882 - $73,434. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

This is a Service Professional (SPF) position. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP), which is an alternative to the ASRS plan for faculty and other appointed staff, will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election.
